THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE CERTIFICATE COURSE

(IFPA accredited)

Students wishing to attend this course must possess an appropriate qualification in Anatomy & Physiology or be working towards one.

This course will equip students with the skills to practise massage in employment or self employment, and can also be a foundation for use in aromatherapy.

The aims of this course are:

  1. To develop a range of skills in therapeutic massage, and be able to respond to a client’s expressed needs
  2. To recognise opportunities for, and limitations to, practice
  3. To develop an awareness of issues of health and disease (physical and mental), pregnancy, disability, etc., in relation to the application of therapeutic massage
  4. To explore and discuss the environment and conditions for massage, e.g., couch, privacy, etc.
  5. To develop sensitivity, empathy and respect within the therapeutic relationship
  6. To develop an ethical, legal and professional basis for the use of therapeutic massage
  7. To explore the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual effects of therapeutic massage, both theoretically and experientially
  8. To develop a knowledge and awareness of soft tissue characteristics as they relate to therapeutic massage, e.g., skin, superficial fascia, deep fascia, muscles, etc.
  9. To explore the use of touch as therapy, e.g., comparison of different forms of therapeutic bodywork
  10. To evaluate the use of touch, e.g., discussion and debate of touch across culture, race, age and gender
  11. To review the historical foundations of therapeutic massage
  12. To develop an awareness of current research in therapeutic massage
  13. To explore and practice related techniques, e.g., relaxation techniques, earthing and centring techniques, self-help massage techniques
  14. To develop an understanding of the legal, financial and ethical requirements of practice

Course Duration

The course is delivered one day a month over a period of 10 months.

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT

The course consists of 60 hours theory and practical tuition, which must be completed, together with assignments, to the school standard. It is a requirement of the course that students complete 50 hours of unsupervised documented massage practice, (massage log), which is subject to ongoing assessment. Students are expected to develop and maintain a portfolio of work throughout the course, which will be assessed regularly by the tutor. Ongoing assessment of practical skills will also take place.
